How do you learn to sing? Or at least fix the "off key" problem? and Can you learn to sing on your own?

I want to try to fix my "off key" problem, I like to sing but just seem to really lack the ability to sing. I have this "off key" problem very very often. I can hardly stay on the key unless I have the song on the background playing. But still, regardless, I still go off key.

I personally love music (listening, such as Classical music (piano/guitar etc) and other different kind of music) and would be happy to learn to sing. So, is it possible to fix the "off key" problem? And can you learn to sing on your own (like with a website or book or something instead of playing for tutors to teach etc.

I am not looking for career or anything, just a personal hobby and little goal/dream that I want to achieve.

Thanks in advance.

Off key, in common speech, can mean two things. One is that you are singing close to the right note, but not quite hitting it. That can be worked on.

Some people can’t really even get close because they can’t really tell the difference. Musical ability is genetic, to a great extent. If you can’t ‘carry a tune’ at all, you will struggle to make any progress.

Maybe you aren’t that hopeless. One thing that helps is to record yourself and go back and listen to what you did.

How well can you learn to sing if you’ve got nothing much to start with?

Can you learn to sing well enough to perform, just as an average singer in a band, or as a backing singer? Or just to not sound painful when you try to sing?

I started singing out of tune (painfully), but with good teachers and a lot practice, I was able to sing for Musical shows and Opera – and did some non-professional backing (Rock).

Is it possible to learn to sing well?

I would love to be able to sing and was wondering if you can learn to sound well.
I mean I can sing… I just sound like crap.
If it is possible to learn, how? (not with a singing teacher or anything that would cost money)
So is it something you either have or you dont or can it be learnt?

Anyone can learn to sing it is not that hard. Some people will have an easier time of it though as natural talent always has an influence. However, without spending any money your chances will be much slimmer a any decent instructional course or tutor is going to cost … anything ‘free’ is usually crap. Here is an article which might help you a bit but i would reconsider spending some money on a book or downloadable course because trawling the net will not help you much in the long run.

6 Tips For a Better Singing Voice

I believe that singing is an inbuilt part of the human mind and soul. For countless years the act of singing has been at the forefront of art, religion, social changes and of course love. We all have a desire to let flow with a burst of air and noise that lifts the soul and transports an emotive message be it from the screaming energetic rock anthem to the operatic tones of more studied precise singers.

We are not all born with a natural talent though but with practice anyone can take their instinctual desire to sing and become very good at it. Here are some tips for a better singing voice that can help you professionally, at the karaoke bar or even in the shower for your own enjoyment!

1. Control breathing

One mistake many singers make is to hold their breath while singing instead of letting the air flow through them. If you hold your breath tight you can never achieve a natural sound nor will you be able to achieve any great volume and it makes hitting the right tone harder as well. To combat this you must learn diaphragmatic breathing. This means you must breathe in to the lower part of your lungs by breathing deep and not shallow. This is not the same as belly breathing but should press out on your lower ribcage as you breathe in. There are many breathing exercises you can learn to help you achieve this such as lying down and placing a hand on the upper chest and a hand on the lower chest under the ribcage. When you breathe in the hand on the upper chest should not move and the hand on the lower chest should go up and down.

2. Use a Mirror

Mirrors are wonderful devices to help you improve your singing voice …
